"We are getting larger, stronger and better organized with every election cycle. Our success reflects the reality that citizens are getting fed up with the corporate takeover of our country and our government."

The Green Party Platform for 2000
In 1999, a handful of Houston progressives founded the Harris County Green Party to provide a grassroots electoral alternative to a corrupt, corporatized two-party system. Led by its tireless first chair, David Cobb, the party was instrumental in establishing the Green Party of Texas and earning a ballot line for candidates in the November 2000 election. We succeeded in preserving the Green Party's statewide ballot line for 2002 by earning more than 5 percent for a candidate in a statewide race. (Three of four statewide Green Party candidates handily beat the 5 percent mark.)
The following year, 2001, in local elections, quite few volunteers from HCGP were instrumental in helping to elect Ada Edwards to Houston City Council by connecting with her organizers to block-walk, work on phone banks, and help with coordinating those activities. It was quite a learning process for us, and we thank Ada's crew for including us in that significant win for grassroots democracy and social justice.
From 2000 to 2002, our membership nearly quadrupled. However, Green Party of Texas (GPTX) lost ballot access that year, and only regained it in 2010. GPTX retained ballot access that year, and again in 2012, so we are on the ballot for 2014! (Watch for details about more local candidates, or search the internet for local friendly political blogs, e.g., Brains for Eggs.)
